The Center of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (CTH) of the university medical centre of Mainz is seeking to fill the following position for the working group „Clinical epidemiology“ beginning either November 1st 2011 or later:

Scientific employee / epidemiologist (PostDoc) (Identification Number 284/11)

Your tasks:
- Participation in conception, coordination and execution of epidemiological and clinical studies and projects - Preparation of project plans, study protocols and application for the ethics committee
- Drafting study documents (development of SOP’s, workflows and variable manuals etc.)
- Participation in acquisition of third party funding (networking, applications)
- Evaluation of data and scientific analysis of studies (from draft to manuscript)
- Preparation and organization of research projects.

Profile Required:
- University education in human medicine and experiences in the area of clinical and/or epidemiological research (the position also can be filled by a young scientist (PostDoc) with a basic medical training)
- Ability to work in a interdisciplinary, team-oriented clinical/epidemiological research environment
- Organizing skills, high social and communicative competence
- Good PC-knowledge in the usual applications (MSWord, Access, Excel)
- Experiences with common statistical methods (SPSS, SAS or R).
- Readiness for travelling
- Excellent knowledge in English (speaking and writing)

PhD position in Cognitive Neuroscience (Giessen)

We invite applications for a PhD project on incentive motivation in the biological Psychology group at the Department of Psychology of the University of Giessen, Germany. The position is in accordance with German federal law (Ā§ 2 WissZeitVG and Ā§ 65 HHG).

The project will investigate how motivational stimuli are processed in the human dopaminergic system and how these processes affect cognition, in particular long-term memory and decision-making. The work involves fMRI, genetic analysis and psychopharmacology.
Interested candidates are encouraged to develop computational modelling skills. Additional duties include teaching an undergraduate seminar on biological psychology (2 h/week, approx. 30 weeks/calendar year, according to state law). Research and teaching duties are in
accordance with German federal law (Ā§ 65 HHG).

The department offers a research-dedicated MRI scanner with peripheral physiology equipment, EEG facilities and access to a genetics lab through local collaboration. We encourage research visits at collaborating institutes abroad.

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a Masterā€™s (or equivalent) degree in neuroscience, psychology, biology or a related field and with a strong interest in cognitive neuroscience.
Proficiency in English is expected; programming skills in Matlab and experience with fMRI are an advantage.

The position is funded for 1 year (50% TV-H 13 if requirements are met), with the possibility of extension for 2 more years, from December 2011 (starting date is flexible). Salary according to the emoluments group II a/E13 60% in consideration of the personal prerequisites, standard weekly hours, the terms 3 years.

Assignment: The research project focuses on the molecular function and interaction of the transcription factors Wt1 and GATA4 in the development of the heart and gonads. It also aims to elucidate the function of both factors for
tissue-protection in models of heart failure with respect of regulation the biology of erythropoietin (Epo) and its receptor in the heart (for example see: Dame C et al., Blood 2006; Kirschner KM et al., FASEB J 2008).

Requirements: University degree in biology or biochemistry with focus on molecular biology. Background knowledge on developmental biology, physiology or cardiology. Willingness to work with mouse models and primary tissue
culture. Good English skills.

The research theme will focuse on the structure determination of invasion proteins of the Malaria using a combination of approaches including crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. Prerequisites are a very
solid background in crystallography or NMR spectroscopy and protein expression as well as protein purification. The candidate should be highly motivated with a track record of publications in international journals.

He/She should have the ability to work in a team and to move on a project independently.
